There must be some reason why [Christ] was allowed to suffer and to endure; why it was necessary that he should give up his life a sacrifice for the sins of the world.... In these reasons we and all the world are intimately concerned; there is something of great importance in all this to us. The whys and wherefores of these great events are pregnant with importance to us all.
