The last two Japanese defenders on Iwo surrendered on January 8, 1949 [D-Day was 2/19/1945]. They emerged from the caves clean and well fed. They decided to give up after reading, in a fragment of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, of how American forces were celebrating Christmas in Japan. This told them that the war was over. For four years they had foraged food and clothing in nighttime raids on the compounds of American occupation troops on the island.
