There is probably a relationship between the sense of despair some feel and the prophecy that says that in the last days `men's hearts shall fail them." (D&C 45:26.) Another clue is in an Old Testament episode that links the failing of the heart to a loss of courage: "and they were afraid"—because of anticipation of what was coming! (Genesis 42:28.) Anticipated anguish can disarm us and cause us to break even before the battle begins.
