a race of amazons in america

Upon hearing from her husband that Howe was poised to close the trap that would destroy Washington’s beleaguered force, Abigail Adams remained defiant; even if all America’s brave men were killed or captured, she declared, the British army would find itself opposed by “a race of Amazons in America.”
