we are a religious people

The U.S. Supreme Court… waded into spiritual waters when the liberal Justice William Douglas, on behalf of the majority in Zorach v. Clauson, a case involving religious instruction, wrote, “We are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being.” The court reaffirmed that “prayers” and “references to the Almighty” have always “run through our laws, our public rituals, our ceremonies.”
