George Washington, from his hand-copied list of 110 precepts from The Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation, based on rules of etiquette originally composed by Jesuit scholars in 1595. Quoted in Joseph J. Ellis, His Excellency: George Washington. Alfred A. Knopf. 2004. p.9
